About the Business in Vietnam

Initiatives in Vietnam

Based on approval under both Vietnam’s National Power Development Plans (PDP 7 and 8) and Japan’s Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM)*, we are conducting business related to power generation development, centered on biomass power generation, as well as fuel production and procurement. In April 2025, we started operations of the country’s first commercial biomass power plant - and our first overseas biomass power plant - in the former Hau Giang Province (now Can Tho City). Of the 18 biomass power plant construction projects planned under PDP8, we are currently proceeding with the construction of the biomass power plants in Yen Bai and Tuyen Quang. In addition, we are engaged in the production of wood pellets and biomass co-firing at existing coal-fired power plants. Through these efforts, we aim to promote decarbonization and stable power supply by utilizing domestic resources in Vietnam, while also contributing to job creation.

* Under the Subsidy Programme for Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) Facility Introduction, the objective is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in partner countries by utilizing advanced decarbonization technologies; to measure, report, and verify the resulting GHG emission reductions; to issue JCM credits; and to utilize these credits toward achieving Japan's GHG emission reduction targets. This project is being implemented with the cooperation of the Vietnamese and Japanese governments.

Biomass Co-Firing at Coal-Fired Power Plants

Biomass co-firing is a method of reducing CO2 emissions while making effective use of existing power generation facilities by replacing a portion of the coal used in existing coal-fired power plants with biomass fuel. It is characterized by the fact that it does not require new large-scale facilities and can achieve decarbonization effects in a short period of time. Leveraging our expertise in biomass fuel procurement and co-firing both in Japan and overseas, we are promoting initiatives that support the Vietnamese government’s policy of advancing biomass and other co-firing at coal-fired power plants that have been in operation for more than 20 years.
